Upset about Vacation Limitations
from Dee M.

Dear Clara: I’ve wanted forever to take a Caribbean cruise vacation with my husband. For many years the idea didn’t get beyond talking because we couldn’t afford it. Then when it was possible, specific events pulled us to other places. Now, when nothing is stopping us, my husband suddenly has psoriasis and says he doesn’t want to go anywhere requiring bathing suits to fit in! I really feel cheated. What should I do? –Dee

*****

Dear Dee: I enjoyed hearing from you.  It can be hard to take a vacation with a spouse who has P. For years Ed was always in long sleeve shirts. But, when we realize psoriasis is a way of life for our spouses we need to learn how to cope with it ourselves. That means some compromise, of course, but not always.

While you respect how your husband feels about himself, remember a vacation is for both of you.  There will always be other people not wearing swimming suits on a cruise, if I were in your shoes I’d make sure my husband understood that! However, if he elects to stay fully clad that shouldn’t mean you can’t wear a swimming suit! Remember you love each other and you are together and that is all that matters.

I hope the two of you take that Caribbean cruise and have a great time, and I would like to know how it turns out.

Your friend, -Clara
